Panel cutting options

There are a number of options for cutting panels.  Remember, only the skins need real effort.  The foam is relatively easy to cut through, a handsaw, string, nearly anything will cut through it, so cutting through a panel is essentially about cutting the osb at the right places, hopefully at the same time.

Most panel fabrication is still done by hand, with the same tools used at a job site - circular saws.  What you end up with is "cut & turn."  The panel is laid out on one skin, the cutting is done, then the panel is flipped and the process is repeated.  Beam saws (like the Makita 15" circular saw) can be used for 4 1/2" panels and 6 1/2" panels, but are limited to straight cuts (no bevels) for one side cutting.  Chain saws are sometimes used, and have the advantage of single cuts, but the kerf is wide, the cuts are ragged, and the plates to keep the cuts vertical (or to the correct angle) are difficult to adjust.

Another alternative is the electric chainsaw attachment for the circular saw.  Linear Link makes an excellent saw, and it is the choice of most professionals, but it is expensive for a single project.  The best alternative for a single project is the Prazi.  It is an inexpensive alternative that can trim your SIP cutting time in half.
